Rubber top lifts are the outermost layer at the bottom of a shoe heel. The heel works differently from the forefoot. Instead of repeated bending, the top lift handles concentrated impact because the heel strike lands on a small contact area with each step. That is why the top lift often wears out first. Weston states that the right compound can make a major difference in how the shoe ages, and that the heel is one of the strongest visual indicators of product quality in formal and dress footwear.
Weston also distinguishes finished top lifts from top lift sheets. Finished top lifts are ready to attach, while sheets are flat material in 3mm–7mm thickness and 24″×36″ standard size that must be cut into profile first. The stated toplift benchmark includes DIN abrasion performance of ≤150 cubic millimetres under 10N load in the compound they describe.
For formal, dress, and safety footwear, Weston says a 75–85A hardness range is often the right starting point, while softer grades may work for casual footwear.
