Do New EV Cars Need Better Range or Better Charging Infrastructure?

When people compare new EV cars, one number often gets most of the attention: driving range. A higher range figure sounds reassuring. It suggests fewer charging stops, more freedom on highways and less anxiety about running out of charge.

But there is another part of the equation that is just as important: where, when and how quickly the vehicle can be charged.

This raises an interesting question for electric mobility in India. Should manufacturers focus more on increasing battery range, or should the industry concentrate on making charging infrastructure easier to access?

The answer is not as simple as choosing one over the other. A well-designed electric vehicle needs a sensible range, while a dependable charging network makes that range much more useful.

Range matters, but bigger is not always better

Range is important because it directly affects how an EV fits into everyday life. Someone who primarily drives within a city may not need an extremely large battery. If the vehicle can comfortably cover several days of regular commuting before needing a charge, a higher battery capacity may offer little practical advantage.

The situation changes when the car is used for longer journeys. Highway driving involves greater distances between stops, and access to a charger cannot always be taken for granted. In such cases, a longer range can provide a valuable buffer.

This is particularly relevant for electric SUVs. Their size, seating capacity and ability to handle longer journeys make them appealing to families, but buyers may also expect them to be capable of travelling beyond the city.

Current EVs already demonstrate that useful range is possible without relying on extremely large batteries. For example, one current electric SUV specification lists claimed ranges of 438 km and 532 km for different configurations, with battery capacities ranging from 59.6 kWh to 70 kWh.

The important point is that range should be viewed in context. Real-world efficiency can vary depending on speed, traffic, driving style, terrain, temperature, air-conditioning use, payload and other conditions. The certified range is therefore a useful reference, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed distance for every journey.

Charging infrastructure solves a different problem

Even an EV with an impressive range eventually needs to be charged.

That is where infrastructure becomes crucial.

Imagine a car that can travel more than 500 km on a charge, but the driver cannot find a suitable working charger during a long highway trip. The larger battery does not completely solve the problem. On the other hand, an EV with a moderate range becomes much easier to live with when chargers are conveniently available at workplaces, shopping centres, residential complexes, hotels and along major routes.

India’s public charging network has expanded significantly. According to government data released in February 2026, 29,151 public EV charging stations had been installed across the country. The government has also allocated funds through FAME-II and PM E-DRIVE to support public charging infrastructure, including in Tier-2 cities and rural areas.

The government has also established guidelines for EV charging infrastructure covering standards and protocols intended to support a connected and interoperable charging network.

These developments matter because the quality of charging infrastructure is not simply about the number of charging points.

More chargers are useful only when they are usable

For an EV owner, a charging station is valuable when it is available, compatible, conveniently located and capable of delivering the expected charging speed.

Consider a highway journey. Finding a charger 20 km away is not particularly helpful if it is already occupied. Similarly, a fast charger does little for a driver if it is not operational or if the vehicle and charger do not support the same charging standards.

This is why charging infrastructure needs to be considered in terms of accessibility and reliability, rather than simply counting installations.

Charging speed also matters.

A home AC charger can be convenient because the vehicle can be plugged in overnight. Public DC fast charging serves a different purpose. It can make longer journeys more practical by adding a meaningful amount of charge during a short stop.

For instance, a current electric SUV specification lists DC charging of up to 110 kW and a stated 10% to 70% charging time of 28 minutes for certain configurations.

That distinction is important. The best charging solution is not necessarily the fastest charger everywhere. Instead, different types of charging need to work together.

Home charging can reduce dependence on public chargers

For people with access to private parking, home charging can change the EV ownership experience.

Instead of visiting a petrol station several times a month, an owner can plug the vehicle in after returning home. The car can then start the next day with a useful level of charge.

This also changes how range should be evaluated.

A driver who regularly starts each morning with a charged battery may have less need for an exceptionally long driving range. In such circumstances, charging convenience can be more valuable than adding another 100 km of certified range.

However, home charging is not equally accessible to everyone. Apartment residents, people without dedicated parking and drivers who frequently travel between cities may depend more heavily on public charging infrastructure.

That is why improving public charging remains important even as EV battery technology develops.

Should manufacturers prioritise range or charging?

For most buyers, the better approach is balance.

An EV should have enough range for the intended use without carrying an unnecessarily large battery. At the same time, drivers should have access to dependable charging when they need it.

There is also a practical reason to avoid viewing bigger batteries as the complete answer. Larger battery packs can add weight, require more raw materials and increase the amount of energy needed to move the vehicle. If a driver rarely needs the additional range, that extra capacity may not deliver much everyday value.

A sensible EV, therefore, is not necessarily the one with the biggest battery. It is the one whose range matches its intended use and whose charging system makes replenishing that range straightforward.

What should buyers look at when comparing new EV cars?

Range should certainly remain on the checklist, but it should not be the only specification considered.

First, look at the certified range and understand that actual results can differ. Then check the usable battery capacity, AC charging capability and DC fast-charging capability.

The charging connector is another practical consideration. CCS2 is widely used for electric cars in India, and checking compatibility with the charging networks along frequently used routes can prevent surprises.

It is also worth checking how easily a home charger can be installed and whether your parking arrangement supports regular overnight charging.

For frequent highway travellers, the availability of chargers along common routes may matter more than a small difference in certified range. For city-focused drivers, home charging and everyday efficiency may be more important.

The real answer is better integration

The range-versus-infrastructure debate can make it sound as though one has to replace the other. They address different parts of the same ownership experience.

A longer range gives drivers a larger travel buffer. Reliable charging infrastructure gives them more confidence that the battery can be replenished when required.

For new EV cars, therefore, the goal should not simply be to chase a bigger range figure. Nor is installing more charging points enough by itself. What matters is how effectively the vehicle, charger, electricity supply and user’s daily routine work together.

This becomes even more important as electric SUVs and other EVs become part of different kinds of driving lifestyles. A vehicle used for urban commuting has different requirements from one regularly taken on intercity journeys.

For buyers, the smartest question may not be, “How far can this EV go?”

A better question is, “How easily can I charge it for the way I actually drive?”

Once that question becomes part of the buying decision, range and charging infrastructure stop being competing priorities. They become two parts of a more practical EV ownership experience.
